UFC Vegas 54 Picks & Promos

UFC Vegas 54 is an above average Fight Night card streaming live on ESPN+ from the Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. This card takes us back to the Apex for the first of three Fight Night cards.
The 11 fight card takes place on Saturday May 14th, 2022. The first fighters will make the walk to the octagon at 730PM EST. You can stream the entirety of the card live on ESPN+. The card features a main event at the top of the light heavyweight division. Jan Blachowicz will try to take a step back towards regaining his championship against rising contender Aleksander Rakic.

✅ Pick - Angela Hill +155 over Virna Jandiroba
This fight is an extreme contrast in styles in the striker vs grappler mold. Virna Jandiroba is an extremely high end BJJ fighter, but has real limitations to the remainder of her game. Her striking remains limited and not nearly a difference maker against skilled UFC strikers. Her wrestling chops are also limited, and Angela Hill brings stout takedown defense and scrambling ability. If Jandiroba were able to get the fight settled on the floor she would have a very strong chance of finding a submission. I find that scenario fairly unlikely, and think we will get a stand up heavy striking fight. Hill will pour on the volume and precision on the feet. She will progressively see the damage add up as the volume landed will be high.
✅ Pick - Amanda Ribas +155 over Katlyn Chookagian
This is another fight that will play out as striker vs grappler, but not nearly at such an extreme contrast. Amanda Ribas brings world class BJJ to the octagon, but is not limited as a striker or wrestler. Neither of those attributes of her game are elite, but she is capable in both areas. I believe 125 is better weight class for her, as the cut to 115 is too extreme. We will see Ribas have a power edge in the striking, and additionally look to wrestle. Ribas has landed at least one takedown in every UFC appearance and this fight will be no different. Katlyn Chookagian is a striker with solid enough defensive BJJ. That said, she allows nearly half of takedown attempts to be completed. Chookagian is the more skilled and longer striker, but I believe this fight will be decided in the grappling realm, which gives a large edge to the underdog in Ribas.
✅ Pick - Ion Cutelaba -215 over Ryan Spann
Ion “Hulk” Cutelaba is all action, and looks for knockouts and takedowns from the first seconds of all of his fights. In a fight where both he and Ryan Spann are large light heavyweights, Cutelaba will hold the power edge and a large wrestling advantage. Now, Spann has shown he has a dangerous guillotine. Cutelaba will have to be aware of where he sticks his neck when taking the fight down. Outside of that submission attack however, Spann will have little in the way of answers of Cutelaba's takedowns. Cutelaba is also in an uncommon spot where he will have the better cardio. Whether this fight ends early or goes deeper, all of the advantages go to the favorite here.
