December 21, 2020

Date:Tuesday, December 22nd
Time:3:30 PM ET
Network:ESPN
Venue:Albertsons Stadium
Spread:Tulane -2.5
O/U:57

The 6-5 Tulane Green Wave will meet the 6-2 Nevada Wolfpack on Tuesday afternoon in the Idaho Potato Bowl at 3:30 PM ET in Albertsons Stadium. While both of these teams approach the game differently, both have dangerous offenses that have been inconsistent. It’ll be interesting to see who prevails as both squads have struggled of late. The Green Wave come in as 2.5-point favorites and we’re expecting plenty of points on the board with a 57 over/under. Let’s dive into how this game will go down and who will end up covering the spread. Make sure to check out the rest of our CFB Picks and Predictions as we will have every single bowl game covered.

Trends

  • Green Wave are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games following a straight-up win.
  • Wolf Pack are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following an ATS loss.
  • Under is 4-1 in Green Wave last 5 games overall.
  • Under is 4-0 in Wolf Pack last 4 bowl games.

When The Tulane Green Wave Have The Ball

It’s been an up and down season for the Green Wave, but the talent is certainly there. Freshman QB Michael Pratt has followed suit with inconsistencies, but he’s up to 1,638 yards with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions. That’s on top of 204 rushing yards and seven scores. When Pratt is humming, he’s a dual-threat guy that can throw it deep and scramble when things turn awry. His top targets are Deuce Watts (31 rec, 512 yards, 6 TD) and Jha’Quan Jackson (29 rec, 356 yards, 6 TD), who are both elite receivers on the outside.

While Tulane can throw it, they’ve rushed it for 500+ more than they have passed it for. It’s a two-headed attack led by Stephon Huderson (721 yards, 4 TD) and Cameron Carroll (621 yards, 11 TD). Huderson is the lightning to Carroll’s thunder. They have two other backs that average 5.5+ yards per carry and will consistently switch up the ground attack.

When The Nevada Wolfpack Have The Ball

It hasn’t been so up and down for the Wolfpack, who have lost just two of their eight games this season. With that being said, two of their last three games they lost and didn’t look great in. They must right the ship and turn things around as Tulane will beat them if they don’t. Led by QB Carson Strong, who’s thrown it for 2,587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and four interceptions, the Wolfpack rely on throwing the football. Romeo Dubbs is one of the best receivers in the country and he’s hauled in 53 receptions for 960 yards and nine scores. Tight end Cole Turner is no slouch either, catching it 44 times for 545 yards and seven touchdowns.

While defenses always have a problem keeping an eye on both Turner and Dubbs, they also have to pay attention to the running game. Toa Taua averages 6.1 yards per carry en route to 573 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He’s followed by Devonte Lee, who’s been similarly effective in less carries. This is a dangerous offense, but they must take care of the ball and let the defense perform.

Spread Prediction

The Pick: Nevada +2.5

The Green Wave are the slightly more talented team, but that’s about all they have. Nevada is far more disciplined and they shoot themselves in the foot far less often. Carson Strong is the best quarterback in the game and he’s going to throw for at least 250 yards against the lowly Tulane pass defense. The Green Wave can get to the QB, but they have trouble on the top end and Nevada is an offense that can take advantage. Give me the Wolfpack to win this game outright and I’ll take the 2.5 points for a nice insurance policy.

Total Prediction

The Pick: Over 57
Final Score Prediction: Nevada 31, Tulane 27

Neither of these defenses bring much heat and I like what I have seen out of both of these offenses of late. While both Tulane and Nevada have lost a few games of late, it’s mostly because of their defenses or lack thereof. The Wolfpack are going to throw the ball 35+ times and speed the game up as much as they can. Tulane wants to run it, but they also play fast and Michael Pratt has been trusted to throw it deep more and more of late. Give me the over here, though I would rather bet Nevada against the spread.
