New York State Guide

Historically, New York has always been deemed to be disinterested in sports betting and gambling in general. This belief was reinforced by the state’s crackdown on online gambling back in 2011 when it rose to infamy with its ‘Black Friday’ operation. In addition, the Wire Act dashed the hopes of many punters both within and outside the Empire state.

Luckily for New Yorkers, their legislators had a change of heart as far as sports betting is concerned. In 2013, the state legalised sports betting in its land-based casinos. The first sportsbook, Rivers Casino NY, saw the light of the day in July 2019.

New York’s Sports Betting and Gambling History

Even though pundits claim that New York was among the first states to consider gambling, the story behind it remains relatively unknown. If anything, the Empire State was one of US states with constitutions that outrightly prohibited gambling as early as 1821. This proscription was further bolstered by the prohibitions that were put in place by the government in 1864 and 1894. From then on, the fate of the state as intolerant to gambling seemed to be cast in stone until 1930 when casinos would operate clandestinely. Even then, these cloak and dagger establishments only seemed to thrive just because they were backed and operated by the mob.

The advent of legal gambling in the state came later, in the form of Horse racing which, just like in other states, was only allowed on the track, by way of pari-mutuel gambling.

Following technological advances, broadcasts could be used to show other races in other states nationwide, offering punters a diverse array of tracks to choose from.

The gambling establishments of this era had betting machines, and this transitioned them into the popular racinos of today.

Bingo games were introduced and sanctioned in 1957, closely followed by lotteries in 1966 and charity games in 1970. The gambling environment in New York continued steadily, culminating in table games and slot machines which were offered by tribal casinos as Class 3 games. Residents soon witnessed the introduction of commercial casinos and sportsbook through the 2013 Act which sought to promote the economy of the upstate area.

Forms of Legalized Gambling in New York

The different types of gambling that avail under New York Laws are as follows:

Sports Betting

Whether done in remote or at gaming establishments, the Empire State has sanctioned pari-mutuel gambling. This approval means punters can sample broadcast races and bet on them, owing to the new technology that is currently in use in most betting establishments. The state is also looking to generate tax revenue from bookies.

Online Casino & Sports Betting

Presently, the law remains unclear as regards online gambling and gaming in New York. Nonetheless, legislators have indicated intentions to regulate betting on Yankees games in 2019 and while at it, also control online gaming. In this regard, the state assembly is even contemplating mobile gaming with hopes that it shall introduce a whole raft of legislation to regulate internet gambling the moment the federal government sanctions it.

Fast Forward and 2 years later online sports betting is a reality. With 9 sportsbooks offering online wagering on sports New Yorkers can enjoy a broad offering of online sports betting.

Casino Betting

Thanks to various tribal casinos in the state, gamblers can engage in different casino games in the state of New York. Furthermore, new casinos were sanctioned by Senate under the 2014 Act, which ratified the commissioning of more commercial casinos in upstate New York. These casinos had licenses issued in 2014.

Live Casino Poker

Gambling enthusiasts can now visit tribal casinos or enjoy live poker gaming. Besides, social gaming competitions have also been recognised by the Senate under statutory law subject to gamers observing rules of fair play. It is also a mandatory requirement that no one should profit from live games.

Other Forms of Betting

The state offers additional options such as Charity gaming, Bingo, Interstate games and lotteries and well as raffles. These are on condition that each of the games must be individually state vetted, with approvals by the relevant state agencies. On the other hand, race tracks may offer more specialised operations such as betting machines for bingo and raffle games. These increased offers have effectively turned the racetracks into racinos
