When The Arizona State Sun Devils Have The Ball
The Sun Devils faced off with the dangerous Rhode Island Rams last night and took care of business 94-88. The score doesn’t tell the whole story as Arizona State was never really in risk of losing this one. They showed how dangerous they are offensively, but were also exploited a bit defensively. They must sure things up against a Villanova team that can drop 100.
Senior PG Remy Martin leads the Sun Devils and he started right where he left off in game one with 26 points, six rebounds, and five assists. He also held superstar Fatts Russell to just 12 points. Incoming freshmen Marcus Bagley (16 points, 7 rebounds) and John Christopher (11 points, 4 rebounds) proved valuable in game one and they will be heavily involved against ‘Nova.
When The Villanova Wildcats Have The Ball
Nova beat Boston College 76-67 last night in a game that was tied at halftime. The Wildcats struggled from three (8/23) and looked lost offensively at times. They lost a few key pieces and the likes of Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Collin Gillespie have a lot more responsibility on their shoulders. Caleb Daniels and Justin Moore stepped up as role players, but they can’t do it alone.
If Gillespie can get it rolling, this team is just as good as they were last season. If he can’t, the Sun Devils have a real chance to beat them. It’s early in the season and this ASU team is more talented than they have ever been. Villanova has to play better defense and hit their threes if they want to cover this spread. It won’t be easy against a Bobby Hurley led squad that looked elite a night ago.
The Sun Devils are one of my favorite teams in the country this season. Bobby Hurley has pulled in the best recruiting class ASU has ever seen and things looked great in the opener. Marcus Bagley is obviously ready to go and I expect him and Martin to turn into a dynamic duo when the chemistry sets. You then have John Christopher, who has the potential to be an NBA star. I like the Sun Devils to keep this one close and possibly win an early season shocker. Villanova really didn’t look great last night and Arizona State is going to score.
I have no interest in betting an under in any of the first few Arizona State games. It’s going to take a week or so for books to adjust, but Arizona State is playing at a torrid pace and they have a phenomenal offense. The ‘Nova defense isn’t very good, and this game will inevitably turn into an absolute shootout. The over is my favorite bet in this game and it’s not all that close.
