Game 1: Columbus Blue Jackets – Tamba Bay Lightning
03.00 PM ET, Tuesday, August 11
Tamba Bay Lightning started off the round-robin qualifications in great style while defeating Conference rivals Washinton Capitals and Boston Bruins. But their last performance when losing 4-1 against Philadelphia Flyers was a bit of disappointment.
Although, the Lightning are favorites in this first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. They ended the regular season 11 points ahead of their coming opponent Columbus Blue Jackets in the Eastern Conference and according to me, this team has what it takes to go all the way this season.
Columbus Blue Jackets rather surprisingly managed to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs in the play-in qualifications while winning 3-0 in the last game to make it 3-2 in this best-of-five series.
The Blue Jackets have been a difficult team to beat throughout the entire season and their goal difference of 180-187 makes them one the lowest-scoring team in the league. Their disciplined hockey outsmarted the Maple Leafs, one the best attacking-teams in NHL, and now they are aiming to do the same against the Lightning.
Conclusions and betting play: The Lightning are up for revenge for last year’s defeat against the Blue Jackets in the Stanley Cup playoffs. They were beaten 4-0 and did not really stand a chance in that series. Despite that, they are quite big favorites this year. They won the one and only encounter 2-1 this season and they are a more solid team in general compared to last season.
However, the Blue Jackets have proven that their hard-working tactical hockey can compete with any team in this league, and most likely they will make this into a very difficult task for the Lightning.
I expect that the Tamba Bay Lightning are very well aware of the strength of their opponents and that they will not give them the space that the Maple Leafs did. 5 goals or less have been scored in all of their games in the round-robin and considering the defensive style of play one might expect from the Blue Jackets I believe that relatively few goals will be scored in this game.
Betting play: Total goals – Under 6.5 (60 Mins) @ -315
Game 2: Chicago Blackhawks – Vegas Golden Knights
10.30 PM ET, Tuesday, August 11
Vegas Golden Knights ended the regular season 14 points ahead of their coming opponent Chicago Blackhawks. That fact, as well as their most convincing three straight victories in the round-robin qualifications, makes them the obvious favorite in this first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
They are coming from a tough fight against the Colorado Avalanche where they managed to win 4-3 on overtime. In the two first games, they defeated both the St. Louis Blues and the Dallas Stars. Most of all they have been looking very sharp in the offensive zone but they might be getting less space as they are entering this game as big favorites.
Chicago Blackhawks performed on a high level when defeating the favorites Edmonton Oilers 3-1 in a very entertaining play-in series. The Blackhawks were the lowest-ranked team in the Western Conference and very few believed that they would be able to knock out such a talented team as the Oilers.
They won 3-2 on Saturday to make it two straight wins and they ought to be pumped up with confidence after those impressive performances.
Conclusions and betting play: A lot of goals have been scored so far when these teams have been involved but I still find the betting value in the under 7.5 goal line pick.
8, 10, and 6 goals were scored during regular time in Vegas’ three games of the round-robin series. 10, 9, 7, and 5 goals were scored in Chicago’s play-in series against the Oilers. The trend is that fewer goals have been scored from the beginning until now and I do believe it will continue in that direction for these teams.
The character of Vegas Golden Knights is very offensive but I still believe that will have to be more focused on their defensive play when entering the knock-out stage. At the same time, the Blackhawk’s chance in this series is to close down their offensively talented opponent. All in all, these factors make me convinced that less than eight goals will be scored in game 1 of this series.
