How Legal Sports Betting Works in Michigan

With sports betting becoming legal in Michigan following the passing of the gambling expansion bills, players can now wager money on their favorite sports leagues and events from the comfort of their homes. However, to bet on sports in the state, you must be at least 21 years old, which is the legal gambling age.

You can either bet right from your mobile device or desktop computer or visit a land-based casino with a retail sportsbook in the state. However, whichever sports betting platform you want to use in the state, make sure it is licensed and regulated by the appropriate authority.

If you will be betting on sports online in Michigan, you can do that either through the website or app of a licensed sportsbook. However, as part of the gambling laws, players must be within the walls of the state before they can be allowed to place a bet online.

For this reason, legal sportsbooks in the state use geolocation technology to know where players are accessing their sites from. If you are using a sports betting app, the operator may require that you turn on the location services on your home. This way, it can track your location to ascertain that you are within the walls of the Great Lake State.

How to Spot Licensed Michigan Online Sportsbooks

As a Michigander, if you want the best experience gambling, you need to choose a licensed operator. However, you should be aware that several offshore betting sites also target players in the state. These sportsbooks are not recommended because they do not operate with a license from the Michigan Gaming Control Board. Thus, if issues arise while playing at such casinos, there is almost nothing you can do.

All online sports betting operators that have a license from MGCB are required to provide players with the best services. They must follow the rules and regulations that the gaming board has specified. Failure to do so may result in being fined, or in some cases, their license can be revoked. Below are the easiest ways you can spot an online sports betting site that is licensed by MGCB.

  • Choose one of our recommended sportsbooks. We list only licensed sports betting sites on our platform, so you can rest assured they are legit.
  • Check the footer of the betting site to see if an MGCB seal is present or mention the license.
  • Ask the customer support of the betting site for information about the license and verify it on the MGCB website.

Sports and Markets

Sports to Bet on in Michigan

As an MI player, you can bet on different sports at legal sports betting apps and sites. This includes soccer, football, basketball, hockey, and so on. Currently, Tribal casinos in the state offer more betting opinions than Detroit casinos. However, here are some of the popular sports that Michiganders love to bet on.

  • NHL Betting: Many Michigan players love betting on hockey. Detroit Red Wings is one of the popular teams in the NHL that players enjoy betting on. The team has won the Stanley Cup title eleven times.
  • NFL Betting: Americans are known to be football lovers, and people in the Great Lake State are not any different. The Detroit Lions is one of the teams that Michiganders bet on. They were able to bag four NFL championships from 1935 to 1957 but are yet to feature in the Super Bowl. The Lions is a partner with BetMGM.
  • MLB Betting: Another popular sport to bet on at licensed sportsbooks in Michigan is baseball. Detroit Tigers is probably the oldest professional sports team in the state and many players enjoy betting on them. However, MLB betting is not as popular as NFL betting in the state.
  • NBA Betting: Top Michigan licensed sportsbooks feature basketball betting. Detroit Pistons is one of the teams in the NBA, and they have fans, some of whom love betting on the team. In addition, Michigan players also love betting on other NBA teams.
  • NCAA Betting: Another popular sport that players in the Great Lake State bet on is the NCAA. The Michigan Wolverine has won 11 national titles over the years and is undoubtedly one of the biggest in college athletics. The best sportsbooks offer several betting options for bettors on NCAA games.

Popular Betting Markets and Options

There are various top legal sports betting apps and sites offering numerous markets and options. This means that you will be able to bet on different kinds of predictions, both the regular markets and special options. Here are some of the popular markets among Michiganders.

  • Moneyline
  • Totals Under/Over
  • Point Spread
  • Parlays
  • Teasers
  • Prop Bet

Live Betting and Live Streaming at MI Betting Sites

Live betting is completely legal in the Great Lake state, and several bettors enjoy placing this kind of bet. One of the good things about in-play betting is that you can use the current statistics of the game to make an informed decision on the best prediction to go for. Also, unlike some US states, the Michigan sports gambling law does not forbid any form of live betting. So it is safe to say you can bet on professional and college sporting events currently in play.

To complement live betting, some of the best betting operators in the state also offer live streaming services. This means that you can catch all the actions of selected sports games on your device. This will make it easier for players to stay up-to-date with their bet and know the best type of bet to place on in-play games.

Sports Betting Bonuses in Michigan

You can claim numerous bonuses when you play at the best Michigan online casinos and sports betting sites. With these bonuses, you will have a chance to bet on more sporting events, and you can also win real money from them. This section will provide an insight into some of the popular bonuses available to claim at legalized sports betting sites in the Great Lake State.

Welcome Bonuses

Almost all MI online gaming sites offer new players joining their platform a welcome bonus. This bonus is a way of the operator welcoming you on board, and it can help you kick start a great gaming experience. Some sportsbooks in the state also offer no deposit welcome bonus that you can claim without funding your account. However, the most common welcome bonuses at these sites are risk-free bets.

Risk-Free Bets

In this kind of bonus, you will be given a risk-free bet when you deposit a specified amount at the casino. However, you will need to bet the deposited funds before the bonus can be available. If you lose your bet, the bonus will give you another chance to win from it. In most cases, operators specify the games you can bet on using this bonus. BetMGM, for instance, offers new players a $600 risk-free bet on their first deposit.

Cashback Bonuses

Cashback bonuses are another kind of bonus you can claim at top sports betting and online casino sites in Michigan. The bonus is offered as a percentage of the money players lost betting on games within a specified period. For instance, some operators offer weekly cashback bonuses, which means that you will get a specified percentage of your losses as a bonus at the end of every week.

Match Bonuses

Match bonuses are deposit bonuses that some top MI sports betting operators offer players. The way the bonus works is pretty straightforward. You will be rewarded with a percentage of the amount you deposit as a bonus to use on games. For instance, a sportsbook can offer new players a 100% match bonus as their welcome bonus on the first deposit.

VIP Rewards

Some Michigan sports betting sites have a VIP reward program that they use to reward their loyal players. The way the program works may differ from one operator to the other. The rewards you will get can vary, from risk-free bets and cashback bonuses to bonus cash. You may also get a personalized account manager and priority withdrawal processing as a VIP player.

Promo Codes

Some Michigan sportsbooks require that players provide promo codes before they can be allowed to claim bonuses. A promo code is an alphanumeric digit which you need to enter in a specified field to claim the bonus. If a code is required to claim an operator's bonus, you will likely find it in the promotions section of the betting site. Here, you will also see all the current bonus offers of the sportsbook.

Bonus Terms and Conditions to Consider

Before you claim any Michigan online sports betting bonus, you should go through the bonus terms and conditions. This will tell you what you need to do to keep winnings made from the bonuses. As a matter of fact, the terms and conditions of a bonus determine the true value of the offer. Here are some of the important things to check in the bonus T&Cs.

  • Wagering Requirement: This is the number of times the operator has specified for players to bet the bonus before they can withdraw winnings made from it.
  • Minimum Odds: Most sportsbook bonuses come with a minimum odds that you can bet on per game. As you may know, odds are a representation of the risk as perceived by the operator. So make sure you check the minimum odds set for any bonus you want to claim at Michigan sports betting sites.
  • Maximum Winnings With Bonus Money: In some cases, MI online sports betting sites may specify the maximum amount you can win with a bonus offer. If the maximum win is lower than what you want, then the bonus may not be the best for you.

Mobile sports betting Michigan

Governor Gretchen's signing of the gambling expansion bill paved the way for mobile sports betting in the Great Lake State. MI players can now bet on sports right from their Android and iOS devices without any issues. Several perks come with gambling on mobile. First, you can bet on the go, whether on a moving bus or train. Besides that, you can stay up-to-date with your bets and enjoy exclusive offers. Some of the top sports betting apps in the state include William Hill and BetMGM.

Odds at Michigan Online Sportsbook

The odds that a betting operator assigns to games is one of the key things that you need to consider as a bettor. This is because it tells you how much you can win. Top sports betting sites in Michigan offer great odds for their events. This way, you can stand a chance to win more money. In addition, their odds are regulated by appropriate authorities, so you can rest assured that you won't be cheated.

Calculating your potential winnings using odds is quite straightforward. For example, if you bet on an outcome in a sports game with odds of +120, it means that for every $100 bet you place, you will get a total of 120 as the return. If the odd is negative, say -130, then it means that you stand a chance to win $100 for every $130 you place. When you enter the sports betting section of a Michigan gambling operator, you will see the odds for each game. If you place parlay bets, you will see the overall odds in the bet slip section before staking your wager.

The Pros of Michigan’s Tax Rate and Legislation

Mobile wagering is one of the most critical components in online betting on sportsbooks. Online betting increases the betting of mature sports to about 80-98% when betting with all the market options available.

Every user can also access online betting using a legal sportsbook when you are in the legal geolocation. You can simply register, deposit, and bet in your home comfort without having to move anywhere. You can also bet on the move easily using the app.

There are also several online sportsbooks to choose from. This gives you myriad options to choose the best sportsbook you feel will offer you amazing games with the best promotions and bonuses. They are also plenty to make the market competitive and make the sportsbooks provide the best services to have more clients. All the sportsbooks are ready to get players all around Michigan.

There is also important legislation on the sports betting bill that increases the need for competition between the dozen sportsbooks available. These legal conditions can significantly affect the market and may not be well for online players. There is a need for the best promos and odds from these sportsbooks to make betting more exciting and rewarding.

The Cons of MI Sports Betting Bill

Online marketing for betting has taken a very long time to go live with all its promising benefits. The close of sportsbooks due to covid-19 has also greatly affected them this year. They reopened but had to close again following a surge in the number of coronavirus patients.

This was practical in November when three sportsbooks had to close. However, tribal casinos that are not regulated by the state laws wanted to continue with their operation in the remote areas that are not convenient for online gamblers.

The online option helps to wager legally. There are several anticipated uncertainties in the coming year. Eyes are still out looking for the new year and waiting for the sportsbooks to go live and make bettors’ lives easy.

The History of Gambling in Michigan

Long before the US Supreme Court overturned PASPA, Michigan tried to get sports betting legalized in the state. In 2015, Rep. Robert Kosowski introduced two pieces of legislation for sports betting - the H 4669 and H 4670 bill. The H 4669 bill moved to allow casino infrastructures to offer sports betting services. At the same time, the H4670 focused on enabling them to provide wagering on simulcast horse racing. A year later, Rep. Kosowski also presented the H 5828 bill, which included the rules for permitting operators to offer sports betting and commercial casinos in Detroit. However, none of these three bills saw the light of day. But there were clear indications that Michigan was getting ready for sports betting.

In 2017, Rep. Iden also began an effort to regulate internet gambling in Michigan. His bill, H 4929, originally prohibited sports betting. However, he came out with a substitute version that made room for the legislation of sports betting. Towards the end of 2017, Iden's bill passed through the Committee on Regulatory Reform. It was the first Lawful Internet Gaming Act to be proposed in the state.

Iden and Sen. Mike Kowall then teamed up in 2018 to get stakeholders to legalize sports betting. With the H 4929 bill passed, the Michigan Gaming Control Board had the authority to permit online gaming operators to start accepting bets on sporting events. However, Gov Rick Snyder vetoed the bill, so sports betting was not legalized that year.

Despite the several attempts to legalize sports in Michigan over the past, it was not until 2019 that the efforts paid off. In December 2019, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a package of gambling expansion bills into law. These bills included the legalization of fantasy sports contests and online sports betting. With the bills finally signed, commercial casinos, retail sports betting, Native American casinos, online poker, online sportsbooks, online casino gaming, and regulated daily fantasy wagering became legal in the state.

However, due to the coronavirus outbreak, many land-based casinos and sports betting infrastructures were shut down statewide. In June, the regulators started working on advancing their timeline for online sports betting to respond to the gambling difficulties caused by the pandemic. By January 2021, the first MI sports betting site started accepting online wagers. Every online sportsbook in the state has to obtain a license to operate. Some of these online sports betting sites also have integrated pokers and online casinos, such as the MGM Grand Detroit (MGM Sportsbook) and Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (Fox Bet).

Lawful Gambling in Michigan

Although sports betting and online gambling only became legal in Michigan in 2019, gambling itself has always been a pastime for many Michiganders. Here is some of the lawful gambling in the state.

  • Land-based Gambling: Gambling at land-based casinos has been legalized for more than 30 years in Michigan. There are a number of physical tribal casinos in the state and they are licensed under the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
  • Lottery: Lottery has been legal in Michigan for several years under the Lottery Act of 1972, as at the time, revenue made from lottery was diverted to aiding state schools and public education.
  • Charitable Gambling: This is also legal in the state but the only form allowed is Bingo.
  • Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) Betting: DFS was included in the gambling expansion bill signed by Gov Gretchen. This means that it is completely legal for players in Michigan to bet on DFS. The Michigan Gaming Control Board is responsible for issuing licenses to DFS as well as sportsbooks in the state. Daily Fantasy Sports operators in the state are required to pay a tax of 8.4% on their revenue. Within a year, these operators have generated over 14.7 million in revenue. This shows that DFS is quite popular in Michigan.
  • Sports Betting: Sports betting became legal in 2019, following the passing of the H 4929 bill into law by Gov. Gretchen. MI players can bet on different kinds of sports, including collegiate and professional events.
  • Online Gambling: Michigan online gambling became legal when the gambling expansion bill was signed in 2019.

Michigan Sports Betting Rules and Regulations

The Michigan Gaming Control Board is responsible for issuing licenses to sports betting and casino infrastructure. The board was formed in 1997, and it is in charge of anything gambling-related in the state. The Lawful Sports Betting Act of 2019 contains all the rules and regulations that operators and players must abide by when betting on sports.

Under the Lawful Betting Act, the board is allowed to issue licenses to a sports betting operator that either:

  1. Holds a casino license under the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act, or
  2. An Indian tribe that conducts class III gaming in a casino within the state's walls.

Below are the rules that apply to betting on sports in the state:

  • You must be at least 21 years old to bet on sports
  • You must be present within the walls of the state to place bets
  • You cannot bet if you are on any self-exclusion list

Tribal Casinos

Native American tribes are considered sovereign nations. As a result, Michigan does not have general regulatory power over Indian casinos. That said, the state's gambling board, MGCB, has oversight authority over compliance with the Tribal-State Class III Gaming Compacts. Presently, there are 24 Class III casinos in the state, and some offer sports betting services following its legalization in 2019.

Commercial and Tribal Casinos

Sports Betting at Commercial Casinos in Detroit

As of the time of writing this guide, there are over 15 different sportsbooks in Michigan. Three of them are located in the state commercial casinos in the capital city, Detroit. These are:

  • Greektown Casino Hotel: The casino is operated by Penn National Gaming and partners PointsBet, Draftkings, and Fox Bet. You can bet sports events online at these betting sites or visit the casino for retail sports betting.
  • MGM Grand Detroit: MGM is a well-known brand in the US. It unveiled its sportsbook, BetMGM, on March 11, 2020, at its Detroit facility and rebranded Moneyline Sports Lounge as its sports betting lounge. MI players will enjoy numerous betting options and markets at the sportsbook. In addition, it offers both Android and iOS apps for players to install on their mobile devices and place bets on different sporting events.
  • MotorCity Casino Hotel: On March 12, 2020, MotorCity Casino launched its sportsbook, the Fanduel Sportsbook, in Detroit. The online sportsbook also has an online casino section where players can play different kinds of games without having to leave their comfort zone.

Online Sports Betting at MI Tribal Casinos

As we mentioned earlier, there are 24 tribal casinos in Michigan operated by 12 tribes. Many of these tribal casinos have started offering sports betting services to players. In June 2020, the FireKeepers Casino launched their sportsbook in the state, Dacey's Sportsbook. About a month after that, Four Winds opened sportsbooks at three of their locations. They offer betting options on NHL, NFL, MLS, and so on. By September of 2020, Island Resorts and Casino also launched BetAmerica sportsbook.

Below are some of the tribes and tribal casino sportsbooks where you can bet on sports in Michigan.

  • Bay Mills Indian Community - Bay Mills Casino and King Club Casino (DraftKings Sportsbook).
  • Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians - Leelanau Sands Casino and Turtle Creek Casino (William Hill Sportsbook).
