October 13, 2020

Date:Wednesday, October 14th
Time:7:30 PM ET
Venue:Cajun Field
Network:ESPN
Spread:ULL -7.5
O/U:58

The 3-0 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will go on the road Wednesday night to face off with the 3-0 Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns at 7:30 PM ET in Cajun Field. The 23rd-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns enter as a touchdown favorite, so this will be no easy matchup. Both teams haven’t lost a single game and have a true identity to their team, and you can expect this to be close from start to finish. Let’s dive into how this game will go and who will cover the spread.

When the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Have The Ball

The Chanticleers have been superb to start the season, rattling off three straight victories against decent teams. They haven’t played anyone ranked, but Kansas and Arkansas State aren’t pushover teams. They’ll get their first shot at a ranked opponent this Wednesday night when they go into Louisiana to face off with a hard-nosed Cajuns squad that won’t want to lose.

CCU likes to run a balanced attack and they’ve been successful through three games, passing for 728 yards and rushing for 594. Redshirt freshman QB Grayson McCall has done a great job thus far, completing 67% of his passes and throwing nine TD’s to just one interception. He’s also taken just one sack, so he’s getting the ball out in a hurry and the offensive line is doing their job.

The backfield is led by Senior RB C.J Marable, who’s averaging four yards per carry en route to 190 yards and three scores. He’s spelled by QB McCall (139 yds, 2 TD) and Shermari Jones (93 yds, 2 TD), who keep the defense on their heels. Look for Coastal Carolina to try and establish the run game as it is the one way ULL has been attacked effectively to this point.

When McCall does drop back, he’ll be looking for Jaivon Heiligh. The outside WR has caught 12 balls for 219 yards and three scores through three games. Isaiah Likely is a big-bodied tight end with sticky hands. Three of his seven catches have gone for scores. Kameron Brown and Sam Denmark are the two other starting wide receivers, but they haven’t seen a ton of action. That could change if too much attention is paid to Heiligh and Likely.

When The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Have The Ball

The first three weeks of the season have been quite interesting for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. They opened the season up with a commanding 31-14 upset over the ranked Iowa State Cyclones. They followed that performance up with two nail-biters against far inferior competition. The CCU Chanticleers are a team that will capitalize on any mistake and ULL must make sure to play cleaner football than they did in either of the last two games.

Offensively, the Ragin’ Cajuns are balanced, but they open up the passing lanes with their relentless rushing attack. Elijah Mitchell is averaging a massive 8.8 yards per carry and he’s already rushed for two scores in just two games. Trey Ragas has played all three and put up 145 yards and three touchdowns. He’s added 54 yards through the air. Mitchell is the best player on this team and they need him to be active to win the big games. Expect him to be relied upon heavily here.

Senior QB and leader Levi Lewis hasn’t been that great through three games. He was impressive against Iowa State, but the reason Georgia State and Southern were able to keep things close. He’s thrown for four touchdowns and three interceptions on top of 723 yards. Lewis has to be more consistent when throwing the ball down field if the Cajuns want defenses respect. If he continues turning it over, defenses will stack the box and slow down the rushing attack.

The receiving corps leaves a bit to be desired. Peter LeBlanc is extremely talented and he leads the team with 12 catches for 193 yards. It still seems like he is too often ignored and running meaningless routes. Nine other receivers have caught three to six balls, so you never know where Lewis is going with it. If he wants to do damage, though, he should be looking for LeBlanc more often.

Spread Prediction

The Pick: Coastal Carolina +7.5

With this spread creeping over that seven number, I will go with Coastal Carolina here all day. The ULL Ragin’ Cajuns have been decimated by COVID and injuries and they aren’t the team that beat Iowa State in week one. They struggled in each of their last two games and Coastal Carolina is a better team than both.

I expect the Chanticleers to give ULL everything they have and I wouldn’t be shocked to see them walk away with a win. CJ Marable is just as good as Elijah Mitchell and the Chanticleers offensive line has been elite to start the season. I trust the QB play and their weapons more than I do Levi Lewis and co. The Ragin’ Cajuns have flirted with defeat in back to back weeks and you can only play that game for so long.

Total Prediction

The Pick: Under 58 Final Score Prediction: Ragin’ Cajuns 28, Chanticleers 25

These offenses can put up points, but they also both like to run the ball and neither defense is a pushover. The under is a great to make here and I wouldn’t be surprised to see if fall under 60 coke game time. The Chanticleers have every intention of keeping the ball out of ULL hands and the approach of the Cajuns won’t be much different.

Neither team plays extremely fast, so don’t expect any wild hurry-up. That’s not to say they don’t run like a regular college football team in 2020 as they both play with decent pace. They just also like to run the ball and wind the clock in the ladder parts of halves. Give me the under to comfortably hit in this one as CCU gives ULL a brutal test.
