Chardy vs Kudla is one of the more interesting matches in day two of the ATP Miami Masters. The seasoned veteran in Chardy will look to knock out a disappointing player in Kudla. But Kudla playing on home soil could help him raise his level enough to get a win here. In today’s tennis picks, we look at Chardy vs Kudla and give you our best bet based on an interesting trend for one of the combatants.

Jeremy Chardy vs Denis Kudla

Chardy vs Kudla Pick: Over 2.5 sets (+165)

Jeremy Chardy has pulled together some solid results since the Australian Open in February. He won four matches in Rotterdam before falling to eventual champion Andrey Rublev. And, after a first round loss in Doha, he won three matches in Dubai before falling to Denis Shapovalov. The 34 year old is playing some of the best tennis he’s played in years.

A big reason for the recent success of the Frenchman has been his success with his first serve. In his final three matches in Dubai, Chardy had won over 70% of his first serve points. Even in his defeat to Shapovalov, Chardy was up over that mark, but Shapovalov’s near-perfect first serve point record was too much to overcome. Against Kudla, a similar performance with his first serve could see Chardy to an easy victory.

Denis Kudla’s last action came in Acapulco, where he was a lucky loser into the main draw. Unfortunately for Kudla, he was more of an unlucky loser, as he had to face the same player he lost to in the final qualifying round. Tallon Griekspoor was his opponent in both the final qualifying round and the first round in Acapulco, with Kudla coming up on the short end of both of those matches.

For Kudla, Miami is an opportunity to find some form with big ranking points on the line. As a player who doesn’t typically see the main draw of tour level events, Kudla is looking to get a win to stop a 3-5 run in his last eight matches. On home soil, with more points up for grabs than he is used to, we could very well see the American raise his level to meet the needs of a Masters 1000 tournament.

Chardy vs Kudla has only taken place once all-time, with that match taking place at a grass court Challenger event in 2018. Chardy won that match in a grueling three-set affair, with two tiebreaks taking place in the match. Based on the recent form of Chardy, we could see a similar type of match in this contest thanks to an interesting trend that has emerged from the French player.

Heading into Chardy vs Kudla, the Frenchman has seen eight of his last 10 matches go to three sets. Matches against both high and lower level players have fit that criteria over the last few weeks for Chardy, who has seemingly gravitated toward matches that have been decided in three sets.

In this match, Kudla will have to raise his level in order to pick up a much needed victory. But Chardy’s run of three-set affairs makes it worth betting on there to be three sets again in this contest. If Kudla can ride a wave of early adrenaline en route to a first set victory, Chardy can come back from another deficit to push things to a decider. At +165, backing the Chardy trend to continue is worth a go.

The Pick: Over 2.5 sets (+165)

Tennis Betting FAQ

What other matches are worth watching on Day 2?

Outside of Chardy vs Kudla, the match most worth watching might be Marin Cilic vs Federico Coria. Cilic has been having trouble finding form in recent months, and the slow court conditions could favor the clay court specialist in Coria. If that is the case, Cilic could be looking at another early round exit.

What is the weather looking like in Miami for Day 2?

The weather is looking great in Miami for the second day of the Miami Masters. The forecast is calling for sun with high temperatures in the 80s. That should help speed up the courts somewhat, though they are still some of the slower hard courts on tour each year.

When do the best players take the court?

The top seeds will be taking the court when the second round of this tournament begins. Players like Medvedev and Tsitsipas will be on court on Friday and Saturday, when the second round matches take place from Miami.
